Extras

Verdi's Il Rigoletto, in Tuscany

We are in the beautiful piazza of Massa Marittima, for the Festival “La Lirica in Piazza” and witness the last minute preparations before the opening of Rigoletto this evening. Even if Giuseppe Verdi’s masterpiece was first staged at La Fenice opera house in Venice on 11 March 1851, it still seems strikingly contemporary. The plot is based on Victor Hugo’s play Le roi s’amuse. Its tragic story revolves around the licentious Duke of Mantua, his hunch-backed court jester Rigoletto and Rigoletto’s beautiful daughter Gilda. You can of course see Rigoletto in celebrated Opera Houses around the world, but under a starry, night sky in Tuscany, it is something real special.
