Welcome to The Winery, the programme where you discover wines, flavours, cities, culture and tradition.

In this edition of The Winery we are in the Maremma, in the province of Grosseto in southern Tuscany, Italy, an unspoilt region a long way from the centres of mass tourism. On the first day, we will take a dip in the Terme di Saturnia, one of the oldest and most exclusive thermal spas in Italy and visit the Fattoria la Maliosa, famous for its authentic products of artisan wines, honey and extra-virgin olive oil. On the second day we enjoy ourselves on a natural golf course and take a spin on the back of a vintage Vespa. On the third day it’s relaxation before departure. We will visit the village of Montemerano near Saturnia, where we will sample some gastronomic delights, uncover a recipe from Da Caino, the famous Italian restaurant with double Michelin-starred Grand Chef Valeria Piccini and visit the Montauto winery.

How to get there

We’re heading for Saturnia - Province of Grosseto, Italy, a 2 hours 30 min drive from Pisa airport or a 2 hours drive from Rome Fiumicino airport.

Extras

Da Caino Grand Chef Relais & Chateaux two Michelin stars Valeria Piccini

TheWinery 1. In the heart of Montemerano there is a very famous restaurant of national and international renown. This restaurant is called Ristorante “da Caino” GRAND CHEF Relais & Chateaux and has two Michelin stars. The heart and soul of this place is definitely Valeria Piccini. The Caino cellar is truly spectacular, extending several metres under the ancient square with recesses, rooms and subterranean nooks where some 20,000 bottles are stored.

Montemerano in Tuscany, Italy

Six kilometres from Saturnia lies the small village of Montemerano. It’s a jewel of Renaissance architecture, rich in history and tradition, long contested by the powers of central Italy, Sienese, Florentines, Orvietans and of course the Orsini from Pitigliano. This village attests to its former historical importance. Wandering the narrow streets of its historic centre is very pleasant.
